Friday 12th April – Walk *** Orwell County Park – cloudy and cool.

With no wind today we decided we should do something even though the forecast sunshine failed to arrive and it was cloudy and a tad chilly! Bike ride to Falkenham church, or Alton were suggested but, in the end, we decided on driving over to Orwell County Park just outside Ipswich to see if the bluebells are out yet? I make a salad to take and we set off arriving at the car park at 1.45. We head first to bluebell woods but although the forest floor is bright green there are very few blue blues, perhaps next week as the weather gets milder! We meander through the woods down to the River Orwell looking mean and moody with dark skies and still waters! We watch a small ship and a wooden barge head slowly towards Ipswich. We wanted to sit by the river for our picnic but the tree trunks we wanted were already taken so we carried on under the Orwell Bridge. The path follows the busy nosy A 14, again the seat we wanted was taken, that’s school holidays for you. There is a sculpture on a hill that was once Ipswich, a set of tear drop shapes on flag poles that turn with the wind so we headed there for a bite to eat but it was a little on the chilly side so we didn’t stay too long. So, a pleasant 2.50-mile walk then a quick visit to Sports Direct then home the back way to see the thatched pub that has just had a bad fire! There might be some marginal wind over the weekend but struggling temperatures before things improve next week when we head to Surrey to see the lovely Arlo, the Grandson:)
